The Wiltern show was an absolute joy! The walk-on music was ... unique.
Jumping back to the VIP show - very happy that you mentioned Ishiguro’s The Unconsoled as an underrated book (in answer to a question). Maybe some people will be nudged toward picking it up... maybe as an audiobook...
Why, yes. I DID narrate that one, why do you ask?
Great show all round - Did the Severed extended guitar freak-out go on too long? Not to this guitar freak. Love watching Chris’s make the most of his collection of instruments... and his casualness is so refreshing. Just playing the music, man.
Highlights? The Crane Wife selection... the Hazards bit... 16 Military Wives... I’m happy not to hear The Mariner’s Revenge (save it for the 50th Anniversary tour).
You were there at the VIP? If only we'd heard your dulcet tones over the microphone. Of course, you did read The Unconsoled to myself and Carson! "Mr. Ryder...."
Funny, there were moments when (as I’m sure every single member of the audience felt at some point or other) I was sure you were looking directly at me - must have been the Mona Lisa effect...
It was an honor to meet you Colin, and to share my brand new tattoo with everyone there in Salt Lake City! You’re so sweet to make sure I’m taking good care of it, and not moisturizing it with any of ‘that perfumey stuff’. Thank you so much for the amazing show. I waited over a decade to be able to see y’all, and it was more than I could have ever dreamed of. My gratitude can’t be expressed enough! Take good care of yourself through this tour and have fun!!
I was one of those packing the rafters at The Wiltern! I had a blast and found California One a delightful little regional treat. Son's and Daughters was nearly transcendental--it was so cool to hear the whole venue sing "Hear all the bombs fade away." It was my first time at the Wiltern and it was a great venue.
I'm glad you also had a good time--I hope next time I can get VIP tickets!!
Looking forward to the next album with the new songs you played so I can sing those ones too!
This new knowledge about tour bus bathrooms is really going to stay with me, so thank ? you for that. I hope you had time to get new headphones!
It was beyond amazing to actually see live music again and for it to be you all was just the absolute best. I was really pumped A Begnning Song made it onto the set, it always gets me and it felt especially moving (I shouldn’t have said that after the tour bus bathroom comment) last night. You guys were loud and superb and fun and joyous.
Looking forward to the next tour diary! Have a great time at the next set of shows!
From my experience as a merch girl, emergencies of the gastrointestinal sort usually involve a truck stop or in dire cases, a side-of-the-road pit stop. Touring also involves the adage "Know Thyself". If you've got a delicate system, shying away from more...'challenging' foods it probably the safest course of action.
I think it’s healthier if you don’t “Carry It All” and just put the “Rox In The Box.” It’ll definitely “Make You Better,” as “The Wanting Comes In Waves” if you hold it in.
It pains me to say this, as a born and bred East Bay Area boy and PDX transplant, but the LA crowd was the BEST of the tour so far (and I think the band was too). Everyone was into it, knew all the old songs, were open and grooving on the new ones, just a great show and time and evening. Sounds like SLC matched it so here's hoping the tour gets better and better!
Which Portsmouth Sinfonia song did Ross wind up mistakenly playing? I’ve heard you come out to Mountain King before and when it was a different song I figured you folks just got a kick out of what I thought was a middle school orchestra attempting the classics.
Side note, the Wiltern show was my seven-year-old daughter’s first concert. She had a blast but was getting tired by the end of the main set and asked to sit down during California One. When you laid down during Youth and Beauty Brigade she decided she could, too. Turned out to be the boost you both needed to propel yourselves into the encore. Great show!
1)I also fucking hate Vegas 2) I guess no one told Dave Matthew's band that you're not supposed to poop on a tour bus (which seems like an unspoken obvious social courtesy to me but they're a buncha hippies)

This is delightful, Colin.
Aw thanks Emma!

Love love love love these.
The Three Commandments of the Tour Bus:
1. Thou Shalt Not Poop
2. Thou Shalt Sleep 'Feet Forward' In Your Bunk (see Gloria Estefan's 1990 bus accident)
3. Thou Shalt Be Responsible For Your Own Belongings (ie; your mama doesn't live here)
What sort of punishment would befall the lowly soul who does poop on a tour bus? Public shaming? The village stocks? Stoning?
All of the above, and all involving the offending dung.
Does it make a difference if you simply didn’t know the rules, versus a 2-am emergency involving too much habanero salsa on your burrito?

Wiltern Severed went full on Pink Floyd for a minute there, absolutely epic!

Loved the SLC show! ❤️
these diary entries are the highlight of my days! i appreciate you taking us along, it is a real treat.
The Wiltern show was great! I noticed the new Reverend guitar you were rocking with! How was that? Didn't see you grab the 335 at all!
Kinda not feeling the 335 on stage
Cool. Well the Reverend sounded great, and looks unique too!
See ya tonight!
