Expert In A Dying Field by The Beths. The whole album was released last month and it is special. I’m curious how it’s fitting in with the current American music scene. Most kiwis don’t get it (for some reason the current kiwi music scene is soulless reggae and decent soul music).
EIADF is on steady play at my house. I haven’t loved an album like this for some time. It’s good.
Wilco’s 11 LP mega deluxe Yankee Hotel Foxtrot edition is a treasure trove of outtakes that really show how that album was built over such a long gestation period.
I also just caught Snapped Ankles doing their thing live which was pretty great. Came off like Can+Devo+Hippy
I don’t think an official recording exists but one of my fav covers is by The Dead South. They recently released two EPs of cover songs called Easy Listening for Jerks, Part I and Part II and I was hoping that my fav cover would be on it. Alas, no Rox In The Box was to found on either track list. I’ll have to live with my memory of the one time I heard them play it live.
When I was a teenager my best friend had a crappy hatchback that we would squeeze his double bass in. It was not glamorous. Another fun feature of this sweet teen ride was that only one speaker worked. Most stuff was recorded in stereo and was fine to listen to, but The Beatles were hilarious because you were missing half of the instruments. Also, Rage Against the Machine must have recorded in the same way. So much less rage when it’s only Zach and very little machine.
Very interesting Beatles info. I too will be waiting for the album release. For now it's the new Todd Rundgren (just released!), The Chris Squire/Steve Hackett-Squackett and discovering how groundbreaking the group NEU! was. Hallogallo from their (1972!) self titled debut is fascinating.
Lately I’ve been listening to STOP MAKING SENSE. There’s a podcast on Spotify as well as other platforms called Strong Songs. Hosted by Kirk Hamilton (a Portlander btw), he breaks down iconic and not so iconic songs, from many different genres. He did a whole episode on the SMS movie. I was never much of a TH fan, but now have a whole new appreciation. Does 1 hour episodes on usually 3 to 7 minute songs. Also due to this podcast I’ve found a new Appreciation for TORI AMOS!
Been in a bit of a slump lately with the music, maybe some of these recs will get me into listening, but everything has seemed a little bland... discovered the Canadian rock band The Weakerthans, they are alright but nothing spectacular.
I have the marbleized version too of Hounds of Love too! I have to admit, I felt a little annoyed in a very unflattering way that all of the sudden people felt like they had discovered Kate Bush when she's been amazing for the last 40+ years. I'm not proud of myself, but there it is.

I completely agree - this album is fantastic. Can’t stop listening to the title track in particular.
Love the Beths! So cool.
I’ve been on a Josh Ritter jag of late. I also enjoyed his book “The Great Glorious Goddamn Of It All” which has an accompanying soundtrack *ahem*

The Jethro Tull discography from 71 to 77. Tell your mother that you walked all night on velvet green.
I’ve been listening to Loreena McKennitt. A lot of her songs are tragic folktales, too. Her rendition of The Highwayman is amazing.
Check out the Highwomen's version!
Didn’t know that existed. Thanks!
Whoops, wrong Highwayman!
Haha no worries. I was just looking them up and it did seem like a different song.
I just figured it was the same one because it is such an oft-covered song! I'll check out Loreena McKennitt's for sure.
All three of the Wye Oak AV Club covers are home runs.

Wow, fun stuff, Colin.
Great list. My current record room.

Sent me to the dictionary again!!!

I sent a Ds suggestion to him…

Khruangbin's new collab with Vieux Farka Toure. Chicken soul fo my soup.
I've been listening to alot of the replacements, nirvana, rem, sandy denny, joan baez, and many others - an attempt to conjure autumn again
