I see 5 comments already and they all echo my own feelings.
Thanks for inviting us in, Colin. Say hi to the band from us - I hope we don't distract from the creative flow.
Over breakfast wife and I discussed getting tix for the new Springsteen tour coming our way at the end of the year... decided against. But if you guys come round in a year or two, we're on it!
This is so delightfully fun! I greatly enjoy how open you have been with sharing your process, having that veil of secrecy lifted is something very special. The tour diaries were something I looked forward to, and I imaging this series will be much the same.
Absolutely fascinating to be brought in on the process *as it happens* like this, and not a year or two (or three) later, as often happens. This is fantastically interesting and please, please keep it up. Will be so much fun to hear how the songs turn out after having followed along in real-time with all of the ups and downs of creating them.
Can you re-visit Jenny's honky-tonk solo in William Fitz like she did at Kettlehouse? Live what Funk did instead in other performances but really enjoyed Jenny's bit and wished both could have somehow been incorporated.
Also, I find Nebraska to be tedious so please don't try to gather 80 songs for this session :)
This is incredible, having a glimpse into the creative process of making an album. thank you so much. But ... hey, Springsteen did an autobiography, hobnobbed with Obama and did over a year on Broadway, plus put out three-ish albums between 2017 and 2020. But I greatly admire and respect both of you tremendously as artists, performers and good citizens in this world! Hope you get to see their show when it hits Portland at the end of the month. And if you haven't already, be sure to listen to Tracks Disc 2. Stunning that most of those songs were castoffs or relegated to b-sides.
Do you tend to throw a bunch of ideas into the mix then edit it back to get that clean, open feel or do you selectively edit as you go? How do you know when it’s “there”?

We saw Springsteen the last time he was in Portland, they played for three hours!
ok, that's it, I'm resubscribing
Well, well, well! Happy birthday to me with this GREAT news! Looking forward to fresh meat! (Give Chris all the space to go crazy!)
Here I am thinking this is such a great birthday treat for me! Happy birthday to us both!
Interesting to get a little peek behind the curtains! I had heard studio time was expensive and not the time to figure things out.
Hey Colin, I love this "experiment" of yours. Please keep it going. I find it very interesting...and fun.
I am overly excited right now reading this, a new decemberists album coming out requires a week off of work and a road trip down the Oregon coast 🥳🙌
Hi, Colin! I love reading your stories.
And I LOVE that you guys call(ed) yourselves The Decemberists.
I love it more ‘cause I was born IN December.
You guys are the best of the best!
Day made.
I’am Super excited to hear the new album!!!!
I have some serious in-the-weeds questions about your recording process. An in studio q&a sesh perhaps while you’re not doing crosswords and such?

HUZZAH, this has made my day to hear that new music is in the works from my favorite band! Please come back to Vancouver Canada!
