Second: This is so much fun (and Mike Schur, what a guy).
Third and final: The King is Dead was TWELVE years ago!!!?
On the subject of kickbacks - I played a gangster in an episode of Nash Bridges 20 years ago, loading bundles of cash onto a plane... I still have one of those bundles (But damn, it was fake! Unlike your 5 megaton tennis ball).
Colin’s it’s funny how you’re such a great story teller and you loathe music videos. I always felt your stories would make a better miniseries than music videos anyway. I really enjoyed O Valencia though. But that felt more like a tv show than a music video.
I’m a huge Decemberists fan (obviously) but also a huge fan of Mike Schur’s work. My brain nearly exploded when I learned about this video collaboration. Did the video come before or after the band’s appearance on the show ?
Infinite Jest is how I found the Decemberists. On my second reading, on a GOODREADS posting, there was a reference to the video, and after watching it, expanded to some other songs, one of which was MARINERS REVENGE. The rest is history. So glad you all made that video!
Colin, can you do one of your annotated songs entries about THE BAGMAN’S gambit?
I saw the video when it came out, of course, but didn’t read the novel until 2015-16 I think (running up the largest overdue fines to the Multnomah Cou-- I mean, Timberland Regional Library I’ve ever had) and then just viewed that scene through the video’s lens. The song captures the Infinite Jest flavor well, and I think that’s why it’s my favorite off that album.
I abandoned the book before ever making it to that chapter I guess. I've been regretting it since seeing the video... but not quite enough to pick up the book again.
I recently watched a documentary about MTV, the advent of music videos, and how they have changed the music industry. Colin, I am wondering what your thoughts are on this subject?
Very fortuitous timing with regard to this post. I was re-watching a bunch of OK GO videos over the weekend and wondering to myself how they managed to get the budget for that...probably all those YouTube hits haha.
First thought: You made music videos?

I don’t know why Funk’s outfit makes him look like an orderly on a psych ward.
Man I thought you were about to rip Dallas/Ft Worth (an area in which I live that could seriously use a good ripping).

Sorry, I just can't get past the picture of you clean-shaven! That was certainly unexpected.
Good stuff, an enjoyable read.
PS could we maybe get a January Hymn tutorial this month?

Most of your videos remind me of a Wes Anderson film. And I like that. :)
Love that video. Too. And I wondered why you don’t make more videos. Know I know.

Loved that video. I have an ETA T-shirt and few people recognize it but those who do wind up having a long conversation with me.

"We had a day to film it; of course, it rained."
I'd always thought this was by design. The rain fits the mood so well....
