This is going to be a great series. I wish more musicians would do this, our local hero here in Duluth Alan Sparhawk of Low has done a number of gear type videos as well, great inspiration for the musician types. Keep them coming!
I am shuttled back to my 17 year old self studying the cover of If I Should Fall from Grace with God and marveling at the instrument in Terry Woods’ hands. At the time, I thought it was a mandola (clearly didn’t read the liner notes) and it has been on my serious wants list ever since..... such an amazing sound.
Loved this!! Just wish you would have strummed each instrument for a minute or two so I could hear what they sound like. Also a model number for that guild 😉
Like you, I also use those same LR Baggs Anthem pickups in my stuff. I’ve found that they’re the most consistent pickups for acoustic stuff. They can take a bit to dial in, but they’re great once you do.
Great little talk, Colin! I especially enjoyed the guitzouki...checked out Andrew Mowry's beautiful work and as you said, not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Thanks - looking forward to session #2.
This is great. Thankyou Colin! I’m currently building my first guitar, dreadnought style, and will be installing a Shadow soundhole pickup as it’s built. Nice to know you have had success with this type of setup.
What’s the instrument doing the plucky / droney thing at the back of the mix on Annan Water? Can hear it clearer at the beginning. It’s got a lush tone.
Thanks for sharing! My Martin had the same split or crack due to weather changes or at least in my case having it out of the case most of the time. Any reason why you have not had it fixed?
More gear episodes!!!
I feel like with a name like "Gear Talk" you ought to get Funk on, answer listener questions and bicker fondly the entire time.
Man I miss those guys!
If a bouzouki falls in the woods …

Here I thought “Gear Talk” was going to be Machine Shop exclusive merch drop...
Sorry, a bit off topic and late to the party, which chorus pedal do you use?

Love the gear talk episode! It was fun to look through pictures I have from Decemberists concerts I’ve been to and pick a few of these out.

Colin, why have the frame saw hanging upside down behind the drum set? It’s not a horseshoe, where the luck would run out.....
