Just a quick (and positive!) reaction after reading Chapter One of Ruthie-- something (I'm not quite certain what, exactly) about both the language, the characters and the storytelling 'voice' (aka the Narrator) reminded me of one of the favorite books of my childhood, Carl Sandburg's 'The Rootabaga Stories'. Perhaps it is the sense of entering into a land where fables - and the fantastic - will occur, and affect both the characters in the story... and myself, the reader.
Short version: what a great beginning. I'm hooked :)
I'm curious to hear what your (Colin) feelings are about these type of unfinished projects. Do they frustrate you? Stick in your craw and nag you? Or can you simply let them go and be free with "making for the sake of making" mantra as a salve?
I'd guess that, like me, your feelings on it might wax and wane. I occasionally feel disappointed in looking at all of my "mid-sentence" ideas. Then I do try to not let that fear keep me from starting up with a new idea when it's purpose is still unclear. Maybe as a "professional" creative you have made your peace with this by now?
FYI Ruthie's last name is "Baumbaum," for reasons I cannot for the life of me remember or fathom, but I'm keeping it.
Mini book like The Grevious Ddmise of Mr. Whitley Rackham????
Or, you know, that spelled correctly?
Thank you Colin for a wonderful birthday present (1/12).
And Happy New Year.
