You should thank Nate for being efficient and saving water and electricity. Thank him by putting a new, bright red shirt that has never been washed before in with his next load.
Nate was 100% in the right. The fact that he didn't remove your clothes and opt to wash ONLY his actually was a kindness. hogging or holding washers/dryers in a shared machine situation is well known to be a pretty ego driven move - maybe ask Nate for the number for his mesc guy?
So great to catch you in DC once more. Re: the laundry - my take leans toward ‘he was trying to help”. But with additional context . . maybe he just wanted all the clothes to get along. A big happy laundry family . . On psychedelics. *shrugs* Thanks for another awesome show!
Posting for the first time just to say that I deeply love these tour diaries. They’re far more fascinating than they have any right to be - in part due to the skill of the writer, no doubt, but there’s something about the mundanity of touring life that honestly is not explored often enough in music writing. And it doesn’t detract at all from the magic (which I can testify was very much present when I caught the recent show in Boston at our new-ish BDRC Roadrunner). Thanks, Colin! Can’t wait for the new record.
I was living in DC when I first saw you play. June of 2004, at the 9:30 club. When y'all played The Tain, I levitated. It was transcendental. I expect that I would've experienced something similar were I there last Friday, except with Joan.
Seeing the Decemberists for the third time in ATL at the new Eastern venue was just, incredible man. I feel like I'm a huge Lizzy fan now and felt so inspired by her.
Also- I could tell everyone was having a wonderful time on that stage! Everyone in the audience could feel it. You were dancing! It has felt truly amazing to have surprise new songs through the tour that I hadn't heard yet. A real joy. The mother's day set made my otherwise nervous for a standing room only situation, more than quelled. She felt so special to share this band with those she loved. I was so proud to stand beside her.
We were in the balcony and singing our hearts off during the song off. Very special memories, very special concert.

I like your perspective.

Nate did nothing wrong.
Barista On Mescaline Stairs sounds like a lost Tom Waits album.
I’m calling it the Collin and Nate laundry kerfuffle.
Colin is tired I think - understandably so. I think the bus heaves off westward toward Texas.
Colin fixed it. :)

“…but I have that thing where I can’t leave an independent bookstore without buying a book, so the TBR list grows.”
Same, Colin. Same.

Nate did right.

Though, seeing as you pack so lite, it’s possible that Nate didn’t even know your clothes were in the machine.
Nate gets a green star for water conservation!
i think it is very sweet that nate added his clothes to yours. that’s true friendship right there.
Nate was right. And at least he was courteous enough to wash your clothes too.
DC show was great! Ugh, wish I was back there again right now.
